What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by the inability to fall or stay asleep. Getting the correct amount of sleep is critical for proper physical and mental development.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Lack of sleep can make your child irritable and unable to focus on daily tasks at home or at school. If your child seems overly tired during the day or is less focused, you may want to monitor the number of hours your child is sleeping. If your child complains about the inability to fall or stay asleep, you may need help determining the cause.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

Contact your Esse Health Child Psychiatry Office about setting up an appointment. Your doctor will review your child’s complete medical history and perform a comprehensive evaluation, including reviewing any medications taken regularly.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Implementing good sleep habits including establishing set nighttime routines are key. If current medications are interrupting sleep patterns, other medication options may be explored. Behavioral Therapy may help your child identify what causes stress and help them manage it. Your Esse Health Child Psychiatrist will work with both you and your child to find a solution.
