WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is considered a developmental disability that may result in social, learning and behavioral limitations. Autism was at one time considered a standalone disorder, but was reclassified in 2013 and combined with three other similar disorders, including Asberger’s Syndrome, and together termed ASD.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Symptoms of ASD may include restricted and repetitive actions, isolation or limited interaction with others, and an unusual sensitivity to certain situations, sights, tastes and smells, among other things.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

ASD may be diagnosed in early infancy. Early diagnosis and intervention can help your child reach developmental goals. ASD must be diagnosed by a professional. Reach out to an Esse Health Child Psychiatrist if you feel your child should be screened. Your Esse Health doctor will examine your child and ask you about developmental milestones achieved and behaviors your child may or may not be exhibiting.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for ASD, but there are multiple resources and support systems in place to assist you and your child. With early intervention, many children have happy and productive lives.
